The Eurasian or European beaver. It was once widespread, but it was hunted to near-extinction for its fur and castoreum. They have since been reintroduced from Great Britain to China and Mongolia. Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926), the German painter, author and illustrator who specialised in animal images.
