Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) studied medicine in France, followed by a short stint in Jamaica as physician to the Governor. He then returned to England with a major collection of plant and animal specimens and became physician to Queen Anne in 1712, and physician-general to the army in 1716, and was made a baronet. In 1713 he purchased the Manor of Chelsea and its estate and leased the Physic Garden to the Society of Apothecaries. In 1727 he became President of the Royal Society, a post he held for fourteen years. His collection and library formed the nucleus of the British Museum.
