Wolfgangus Lazius Historic' Caesare'.
Engraving with very large margins. 140 x 105mm (5½ x 4¼").
Portait of Wolfgang Lazius, within an ornate strapwork border. Lazio (1514-65) was an Austrian humanist who worked as a cartographer, historian, and physician. He produced several maps of central and southern Europe: his maps of Austria, Hungary, Tirol and Istria were some that Ortelius adapted for his 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. This portrait, from Jean Jacques Boissard's 'Bibliotheca Chalcographica' is not the most famous one of Lazius: Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-93) based his 'Librarian', a man made up from books, on Lazio.
