Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) the Swedish naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linneaus. He is often referred to as "the father of South African botany" or the "Japanese Linneaus". In 1771 he was commissioned to visit the Dutch colonies and Japan to collect specimens for the Dutch botanical garden. After many travels he published in 'Flora Japonica' in 1784 and four years later he began to publish his travels. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
