Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781-1826) British statesman, best known for founding the city of Singapore, and as such often referred to as the 'Father of Singapore'. He returned to England in 1824 and turned his attention to botany and zoology. He was founder and first president in 1826 of the Zoological Society of London and the London Zoo. Engraved from a bust by Chantrey, examples of which are in the British Library, London Zoo and Singapore National Library.
