Nicolas-Thomas Baudin (1754-1803) was a French explorer, cartographer, naturalist and hydrographer, best known for his expedition to map the coast of Australia, 1800-3. While stopped at the British colony at Sydney for supplies he prepared a report for Napoleon on a potential French attack on the colony. He named the coastline from Wilson's promantory to Cape Leevwin "Terre Napoleon". He died of tuberculosis at Mauritius in 1803 aged 49. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
