Don Vasco de Gama (c.1460-1524), the Portuguese explorer and most successful in the Age of Discovery; he also commanded the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. This discovery was very significant and paved the way for the Portuguese to establish a long lasting colonial empire in Asia. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
