Jan Huyghen van Linschoten (1563-1611), a Dutch traveller who worked for the Portuguese in Goa, India between 1583-89. He secretly collected papers and in 1597 published his 'Itinerario', a sailing guide to the East Indies that effectively broke the Portuguese monopoly on these routes. The following year an English edition was published, beginning the Anglo-Dutch struggle for control of the East. The portrait was published in 'Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden' (Universal Geographical Ephemerides (i.e. encyclopedia)) by Friedrich Bertuch et al.
