Mr. Jacob Powell of Stebbing in Essex. Who died Octr. 6th 1754 Aged 37 Years. He Weigd'h near 40 Stone.
Mezzotint. 290 x 410mm.
The perspiring face staring out at you down the years belongs to an 18th century Stebbing man Jacob Powell. Very little is known about him except that which is written at bottom of his portrait, 'Mr Jacob Powell of Stebbing in Essex. Who died Oct 6th 1754 aged 37 years. He weighed near 40 stone. '. The full picture shows quite a well dressed man holding a wig in his other hand. His enormous size was obviously his claim to a brief moment of fame. Published by the Haid family in Germany- they appear mostly to have copied earlier prints without crediting acknowledgement. In this instance a British print of c.1754 is probably the source image.
