Portait of Ulrich Frédéric Woldemar, Comte de Lowendal (1700–1755). Although born in Hamburg, Woldemar was a successful military leader for France during the War of the Spanish Succession, capturing Ghent in 1745 and Bergen-op-Zoom in 1747 (for which he was made a Marshal of France). In 1755 Louis XV sent Lowendal to negotiate with Prussia to prevent the Seven Years War from breaking out, but he died before making any progress. Engraved by Johann Georg Wille (1715-1808) after Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704-88).
