View looking south from the Strand, through an arch to part of Sir William Chambers' Somerset House development. Chambers died the year of publication. The artist, Thomas Malton (1748-1804), taught watercolour to Thomas Girtin and Joseph Mallord William Turner. He was also skilled in aquatint, and published many of his own designs, including 'A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster', one of the key topographical resources for late Georgian Londonfrom which this view comes.
