Two actors in character from O'Keeffe's play 'The agreeable Surprise' in a scene set in a kitchen, Lingo seated on a chair wearing wig and pointing upwards, while Cowslip sits facing him with a bowl on her lap. Comic actor John Edwin the Elder (1749-1790) is depicted here as Lingo, with actess and singer Mary Stephens Wells (1762-1829) as Cowslip.
