Moses striking the rock with his staff, creating a miraculous spring from which people rush to gather water and drink. The 1649 painting by Nicolas Poussin, then in the collection at Houghton, was regarded as one of his finest. Like most of the Houghton Collection, it was purchased by Catherine the Great where it forms part of the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.
