Portrait of Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna of Russia (1825-1844), youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, Emperor of Russia, and his wife, Princess Charlotte of Prussia. Framed by an archway overlooking gardens, she has a drawing book resting on the balustrade to right, and her toy spaniel at her feet to left. Titled in French and Russian. Alexandra became acutely ill with tuberculosis shortly before her wedding, and this complicated the pregnancy which soon followed. She went into labour prematurely, and gave birth to a son, Wilhelm. The infant died shortly after he was born, and Alexandra died later the same day. Christina Robertson (1796 - 1854), Scottish portrait painter who spent many years at the Russian Imperial Court in St Petersburg. The painting is in the Hermitage Museum.
