Thomas Candyssh Nobilis Anglus aeta sua XXX.
[Arnhem, Crispijn de Passe: 1620.]
Engraving. Sheet 130 x 95mm, 5¼ x 3½". Trimmed to printed border, laid on card.
Half length portrait of Thomas Cavendish (1560-92), holding a globe and measuring instrument; in oval frame with parapet. Published as an illustration to the 'Heroologia Anglica'. Cavendish was the first person to set out with the intention of circumnavigating the globe, leaving in 1586 to emulate Drake's successes in plundering the Spanish colonies in the Pacific. Having captured more plunder than he could carry he returned to a hero's welcome in England in 1588 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I.
