Seascape with three men-of-war under sail in stormy conditions; a race between HMS Phaeton (1848), HMS Arethusa (1849), HMS Leander (1848) and HMS Indefatigable (1848); the decisive victory was held by HMS Phaeton. Admiral Sir George Augustus Elliot (1813-1903) was in the North American station when in 1849 he was appointed to the frigate HMS Phaeton.
