His most Gracious Majesty George the Fourth.
Large mezzotint, sheet 810 x 605mm. 32 x 23¾". Trimmed to plate, laid on restorer's paper, some small repairs, some scuffing mainly in margins and inscription.
Magnificent equestrian portrait of George IV (1762 - 1830) in uniform, right hand pointing forward, his staff following, cavalry and artillery following. The original painting, by John Singleton Copley (1738 - 1815), showed George as Prince Regent, as did this mezzotint when published by Copley in 1813. This example has had the title updated to acknowledge George's accession to the throne in 1820 (seven years after Copley's death), but the details of George's uniform and staff remain unaltered.
