'Russell's Stingray', showing the top and bottom view, published in Major-General Thomas Hardwicke's 'Illustrations of Indian Zoology', 1830–35. Hardwicke (1755- 1835), an officer of the East India Company, collected zoological specimens and had them drawn by Indian artists. When he returned from India he had the largest collection of drawings of Indian animals ever formed by a single individual, which was presented to the British Museum when he died. He financed the 202 hand-coloured plates of this work, but died before the text was written.
