Indian Dugong.Halicora Dugung. F. Cuv.
Coloured lithograph. Sheet 345 x 490mm, 13½ x 19¼". Fine hand colour.
A Dugong, a marine mammal related to the manatee, published in Major-General Thomas Hardwicke's 'Illustrations of Indian Zoology', 1830–35. Hardwicke (1755- 1835), an officer of the East India Company, collected zoological specimens and had them drawn by Indian artists. When he returned from India he had the largest collection of drawings of Indian animals ever formed by a single individual, which was presented to the British Museum when he died. He financed the 202 hand-coloured plates of this work, but died before the text was written.
