Portrait of Mary of Modena (1658-1718), half length in an oval, hair in curls, wearing necklace. Mary of Modena, Queen of James II, was daughter of Alfonso IV, and she was mother of James Francis Edward, the 'Old Pretender'. Her support of James II's Catholicism, and the birth of Jame Francis Edward, led to the invitation to William of Orange to assume the British throne.
