'An avalanche of snow falling over a gallery in the wild pass of the Stelvio. This is the most recently constructed military road over the Monte Stelvio, and is the only means of communication which the Emperor of Austria has to connect his German and Italian States, without violating the territory of another government.' These are the words of th artist George Barnard (fl.1832-90), in whose 'The Theory and Practice of Landscape Painting in Water Colours' a version of this view was published to illustrate ways of representing mist and snow.
