[Two young servant-girls; one balancing two baskets on her shoulders.]
[Continental, n.d., c.1910-1920.]
Etching on india paper, from a limited edition, signed and numbered '14/100' by the artist in pencil. 155 x 130mm, 6 x 5". Margins lightly spotted; a good impression overall.
The two female subjects in this attractive composition are wearing wooden clogs; this would indicate a Dutch setting. Traditional clogs were often worn for heavy labour, and today they remain in use as protective clothing in agriculture and in some factories and mines. Little seems to be known about the artist, who worked on the Continent around the time of the First World War.
