Rare portrait of William III in ornate dress with high hat. The son of William II of Orange, William was Stadtholder and Admiral in Holland and the United Provinces, and married James II's daughter Mary (subsequently Queen Mary II) in 1677. After landing in England in 1688 he took power in the 'Glorious Revolution' which precipitated James II's flight to France. He was joint ruler of England, Scotland and Ireland with Mary II until her death in 1694, after which he was sole ruler until his own death in 1702.
