Engraving, original colour. Image 225 x 380mm, 9 x 15½". Prepared as a transparency: black borders stuck on over the edge of the image; river excised and replaced with thin paper with features stuck back on; windows excised, painted paper stuck on reverse.
A view of Wren's Royal Hospital at Chelsea and the rotunda designed by William Jones (a surveyor to the East India Company) for Ranelagh Gardens. Not only is this print a vüe d'optique (designed to be viewed through an optical instrument called a zograscope, thus engraved transposed left to right), but it has also been manually prepared as a transparency, with details cut out to give a night-time effect when held up to the light.
