Portrait of painter George Morland (1763-1804), seated half-length within rectangular frame, almost in profile to left drawing; wearing plain coat and necktie. Painter of landscapes and sentimental rustic scenes. Son of the painter, Henry Robert Morland, to whom he was apprenticed in 1777, Morland was precocious, gifted and dissolute, spending much of his later career facing a debtor's prison, despite the popularity of his work. After Robert Muller (1773-after 1800); the engraver William Ward (1766 - 1826) was the sitter's his brother-in-law.
