Portrait of Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648), diplomat and writer; whole length, reclining on the ground in a forest, on his side, one arm propping up his head, a shield over the other arm. In background a horse saddled and in armour, and two soldiers standing by. Numbered 'Vol.I P. 230'. Like his younger and more famous brother George, Edward Herbert was a distinguished poet. In addition he wrote works of history, including a History of the Reign of Henry VIII, and of philosophy, notably De Veritate. Herbert also had a busy diplomatic career in France. He left various unpublished manuscripts, including an autobiography that was first printed by Horace Walpole in 1764. A fine miniature portrait of Herbert by Isaac Oliver (c.1556 - 1617) is in the collection of the Earl of Powis.
