A view of a waterfall from Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk's 'Twelve Views in the Interior of Guiana'. Natives in loincloths are unloading a canoe with a European camp behind. Schomburgk's expedition into British Guiana was under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society, studying the terrain and flora. Besides noting a number of new orchid species he introduced the giant water lilies known as Victoria regia and Elizabetha regia into England. He later proposed a border line between British Guiana and Venezuela, known as the 'Schomburgk Line'.
