Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721), woodcarver and sculptor. His work can be seen at St. Paul's Cathedral, Hampton Court Palace and Blenheim Palace. Very little is known about his early, and two of his closest acquaintances, portrait painter Thomas Murray and the diarist John Evelyn, cannot agree on how to came to be introduced to King Charles II. There is also dispute over whether his father may have been Samuel Gibbons, who worked under Inigo Jones.
