Portrait of Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), Royal Navy officer, novelist, and acquaintance of Charles Dickens. He is particularly known for his children's novel 'The Children of the New Forest', and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling. After Lord Amherst declared war on Burma in 1824, the British sent an expedition of 11,000 men under Major-General Archibald Campbell and ships under Marryat to attack Rangoon by sea.
