Matthew White Ridley (1837 - 1888) had been a fellow-student with James McNeill Whistler in Paris in 1856-7 and shared his enthusiasm for scenes of rivers and bustling docks filled with shipping. In England, he introduced Whistler to the little circle of etching enthusiasts which met regularly at the house of Edwin Edwards and went on sketching parties together.
