The Battle of Marengo, fought on 14 June 1800, saw a decisive French Victory over the Austrians. The French overcame General Michael von Melas's surprise attack near the end of the day, driving the Austrians out of Italy, and enhancing Napoleon's politial position in Paris as First Consul of France.
