Singer and writer Elizabeth Ann Sheridan (née Linley, 1754 - 1792) plays the organ seated on a low stool, two angelic children singing behind; from upper left, a cloud with shafts of light. The portrait on which this print is based, by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723 - 1792), is now at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1775. Miss Linley of Bath married Sheridan, after eloping with him, in 1773. She was famous for her soprano voice. Sheridan, having ordered the picture, found he could not afford to pay for it. He finally raised the 150 guineas in 1790, when Reynolds wrote that it was "the best picture I ever painted" ('Letters', p. 191).
