Johann Hermann von Riedesel (1740-1785) was a classicist who travelled all over Europe. He was Baron of Eisenbach and later became a diplomat at the Prussian Court of Frederick II. He traced the steps of ancient explorers along the coasts of the Magna Grecia and southern Italy. He was very close friends with Johann Joachim Winckelmann with whom he corresponded with via letters, which then made up the basis of his 'Viaggio attraverso la Sicilia e la Magna Grecia' (1771).
