The main gate of Norba, an ancient town in Latium (Lazio), Italy. From the second series of 'Illustrated excursions in Italy' by Edward Lear (1812 - 1888), based upon journeys the artist and author had made into the area around Rome and Naples. Lear lived in Rome from 1837 to 1848, apart from two visits to England during one of which he organised the publishing of 'Illustrated Excursions'. Lear notes in the preface "I have executed the whole of the Lithographic drawings from my own sketches, and have endeavoured to preserve a close fidelity to the Originals". The first series is devoted to the Abruzzi provinces of the Kingdom of Naples, the second to the Papal States. Numbered 'Plate 12' upper right.
