James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose (1612 - 1650), Scottish nobleman and soldier; half-length, in armour; coats of arms inset in upper corners. Montrose initially joined the Scottish Covenanters in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, but subsequently supported King Charles I as the English Civil War developed. He fought during the Civil War in Scotland on behalf of the King and won a series of tactically brilliant victories, 1644 -5, but was eventually forced to join Charles II in exile. Five years later, a final attempt to defeat the Covenanters ended with his capture and execution.
