Constantine Kanaris (1793/5-1877), key figure in the Greek war of independence (1821-9) and later a prominent politician. In 1822 he commanded the forces which destroyed the flagship of the Turkish admiral Nasuhzade Ali Pasha in revenge for the Chios massacre. Plate from a series of twenty-four portraits of figures related to the Greek War of Independence, by the Danish painter Adam Friedel.
