Sir Samuel Garth (1661-1719) was a physician and poet. His attempts to establish a poor person's dispensary were defeated when apothecaries raised the price of drugs, and in retaliation he wrote his satiric poem, 'The Dispensary'. He was Physician-in-Ordinary to George I, and was a member of the Kit-Kat Club.
