John Dunning, 1st Baron Ashburton (1731-1783) was lawyer and Member of Parliament and one of the most powerful orators of his time and a strong defender of the liberty of the individual against the powers of the Crown and government. He was appointed Solicitor-General in the Duke of Grafton's administration from 1768 to 1770, but is better known for his celebrated Parliamentary resolution, carried in 1780, declaring that 'the influence of the Crown has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished'.
