Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738 - 1805). As one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence, his surrender in at the Siege of Yorktown (1781) effectively ended hostilities in North America. He later became Governor-General of India (1786-1793), and won renown for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India.
