Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll (1628-1685) was a confederate of Monmouth and was found guilty of High Treason in 1681 and sentenced to death for refusing to subscribe to the Test Act. He managed to escape from Edinburgh Castle under the disguise of a page, and left the country. However in 1685 he returned in an abortive attempt ot invade Scotland when he was recaptured and beheaded.
