Iacobus dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Fidei Defensor etc.
Engraving. 300 x 190mm. 11¾ x 7½".
Portrait of King James I (1566-1625), engraved in an oval frame after an unkown artist. On the rear is a page of printed text, possibly Flemish, in Gothic script. Head and shoulders, looking to the viewer, with a ruff around his neck and wearing an ermine cloak. Around the King's neck is the artist's impression of the Order of the Garter, the central image being more like a rider on a racehorse set in a round rather than an oval shield. On the King's hat is a large feather with a fleur-de-lys jewel. Possibly after a portrait by Paul van Somer (see full-length in Windsor Castle) - very similar face pattern.
