The Mercury of the Mexicans call'd Quetzalcouatl.
Engraving. 95 x 159mm. 3¾ x 6¼". Cut.
Quetzalcoatl sat on a plinth, worshipped by the Mexicans who present various gifts of animals, drink and food; a man to right whipping himself as penitence. Quetzalcoatl, in Nahuatl meaning 'feathered serpent', is similar to the representation of the winged snake attributed to the Roman God, Mercury.
