The Metropolitan Benefits Society Asylum was founded in 1829 by John Christopher Bowles, under the patronage of her Majesty the Queen and the Duchess of Kent. The Asylum was intended to provide accommodation for ages persons of either sex who were members of any friendly or benefit society and who lived in or near London. The Asylum was located on Balls Pond Road, Islington.
