Male inhabitant of Lima of the middle class of society.[Plate XII.]
Fine hand-coloured stipple, with large margins. Plate 254 x 190mm. 10 x 7½".
A man of Lima, Peru; dressed in costume of the middle class society. From "The Present State of Peru: Comprising of is Geography, Topography...&c.&c....and Embellished by Twenty Engravings of Costumes, &c". This book was meant to be an extract of the reports of Father Manuel Sobreviela (who explored the Huallaga River from 1787 to 1790) and Narciso Girbal y Barcelo (who explored the Marañon and Ucayali rivers in 1791), which appeared in El Mercurio peruano, a newspaper begun in Lima in 1791. However, the compiler was unfamiliar with Spanish and the translation is suspect.
