Portrait of James Hamilton, first duke of Hamilton, half length in an oval frame, long hair, beard, wearing collar, armour, chain and George; coat of arms below. James Hamilton (1606-1649) was a courtier and politician. He sided variously with King and Parliament during the Civil War, but he was beheaded for treason after leading a Scottish force against the parliamentary army in 1648.
