Folkington the Seate of the Hon.ble S.r William Thomas Baronett in ye County of Sussex.67.
Copper engraving. 355 x 489mm. 14 x 19¼". Centre fold.
A plan of Folkington Manor from "Britannia Illustrata". These plans by Johannes Kip and Leonard Knyff are significant for providing reliable records of the development of the formal English garden in the Dutch-French style. The vast lands associated with these houses are now part of villages which as in this case carry the name of the manor house. Built during the 14th century for Viscount Monckton, it was bought in about 1650 by Sir William Thomas (1641-1706), of West Dean with the adjoining manor of Wootton. Rebuilt in 1843.
