Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) was a jurist, poet, playwright, natural law and international law theorist. With Francisco de Vitoria and Alberico Gentili he laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. Portrait of Hugo Grotius, bust directed to right, wearing a ruff and ermine-trimmed coat; in a laurel oval on a pedestal; scales, books, a sword and caduceus on the pedestal in lower corners; the castle of Loevestein where Grotius was imprisoned is partly seen below the oval. This portrait was firstly used as a frontispiece to Hugo de Groot's "Le droit de la guerre et de la paix" published in 1725.
