Henry Moyes (1749 or 1750 - 1807), blind lecturer on natural philosophy (left, with dark glasses), and his assistant William Nicol (1770 - 1851), geologist and scientific lecturer (reading from a small book). Nicol invented the Nicol prism to polarize light, in order to identify minerals, and a technique for grinding sections of fossils or minerals to make the structure visible.
