Devil of Notre Dame [in pencil below image.] [Le Stryge. The empire.]
Etching. Sheet 280 x 190mm. 11 x 7½".
This vampire is one of the stone gargoyles on the parapet of the upper balcony of a tower of Notre Dame, Paris. Charles Meryon (1821-1868) was a French artist, who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from colour-blindness. He was the most significant etcher of 19th century France, but suffering from mental illness, he died in an asylum.
