The Eglington Tournament, 1839. The tournament consisted of a re-enactment of medieval joust with other games and entertainments not just for the nobility and their ladies but for all. It was held in Scotland at Eglinton Castle. It was hugely popular drawing an audience of 100,00 and rehersals took place on land adjacent to the Eyre Arms, in Finchley Road, near Regents Park. As a result the Eyre Arms developed from being a small tavern to a noted resort for Londoners.
